Is HIFU Safe and Does It Actually Work?
These are the two questions that matter most when considering HIFU treatment, and both deserve a direct answer.
On safety: HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is an established clinical technology with a long track record in medical and aesthetic applications. It has been cleared by medical regulators in multiple countries for skin lifting and tightening. Side effects are mild and temporary for most clients. The primary risk associated with HIFU is not the technology itself, but its incorrect application, using the wrong transducer at the wrong depth, or treating over areas where the technology is contraindicated. This is why clinical assessment and a properly trained practitioner matter.
On effectiveness: HIFU works by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the SMAS layer, the deep structural layer beneath the skin that surgeons work at during a traditional facelift. The energy creates controlled thermal injury points at that layer, stimulating the body to produce new collagen and contract the existing structure. The result is a gradual lifting and tightening effect that develops over three to six months as collagen remodels. This is not a subtle or temporary surface treatment. For clients with mild to moderate skin laxity, the results are visible and can last 12 to 18 months or more.
HIFU does not produce the same degree of change as surgery. For significant laxity, surgery may be the more appropriate route. Your qualified, experienced & insured practitioners will give you an honest assessment of whether HIFU is likely to deliver what you want.

About HIFU at Changes Clinic
We use HIFU to lift and tighten skin on the face, neck, brow and decolletage. The treatment delivers focused ultrasound energy at precise depths within the skin and underlying tissue, bypassing the surface and targeting the structural layers where lasting change occurs.
Your appointment begins with a consultation in which your qualified, experienced & insured practitioners assess your skin laxity, discusses your goals and selects the appropriate transducer settings for your anatomy. The HIFU handpiece is applied systematically across the treatment area. Clients typically experience a warm, prickling sensation during treatment; discomfort varies between individuals but most find it manageable. Treatment takes between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the areas covered.
Results develop gradually over three to six months and typically last 12 to 18 months, with some clients maintaining their results longer.

HIFU Carried Out by Our Qualified, experienced & insured practitioners
HIFU requires a practitioner with thorough knowledge of facial anatomy and a clear understanding of the technology's contraindications and correct application. At Changes Clinic, all HIFU treatments are performed by our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners in our CQC-registered clinic in Portsmouth. Every client receives a full assessment before treatment, and the transducer depth and energy settings are selected based on your individual skin and tissue characteristics.
This clinical approach is what separates a treatment that delivers results from one that does not. HIFU applied at the wrong depth or to an unsuitable client produces poor outcomes. Proper assessment and clinical delivery produce the lift and tightening the technology is capable of.

What Our Clients Say
Common Questions
Is HIFU safe?
HIFU has a well-established safety profile and is one of the few non-surgical skin lifting technologies cleared by medical regulators specifically for this application. Common side effects include temporary redness, mild swelling, and a tingling sensation that resolves within 24 to 48 hours. More significant discomfort or swelling is unusual. HIFU is not suitable for clients with certain implanted devices, active skin infections, or significant skin conditions in the treatment area. A clinical assessment before treatment identifies any contraindications.
How is HIFU different from surgical facelift?
A surgical facelift lifts and repositions tissue through incisions made under anaesthetic, with immediate visible results and a recovery period of several weeks. HIFU works non-invasively by stimulating the body's own collagen production at the same structural depth a surgeon would work, producing gradual results over months without surgery, anaesthetic, or significant recovery. HIFU cannot replicate the degree of lift achievable through surgery in cases of significant laxity, but for clients who want improvement without going into an operating theatre, it offers a clinically grounded alternative.
Can HIFU be combined with other treatments at Changes Clinic?
Yes. HIFU is often used alongside dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections to address structural laxity alongside volume loss and expression lines. It also combines well with RF microneedling for clients wanting to address multiple layers of the skin simultaneously. Your qualified, experienced & insured practitioners will advise on the best combination and any timing considerations.
