Cyst removal in Portsmouth at Changes Clinic is a surgical procedure with a short recovery, performed by our surgeon, Obi Onyekwelu.
How we remove cysts at Changes Clinic
Types of cyst we treat
Sebaceous cysts: the most common type, forming when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked. Usually appear on the face, neck or torso. Pilar cysts: keratin-filled cysts that typically form on the scalp. Often run in families. Ganglion cysts: fluid-filled lumps that develop near joints or tendons, most often on the wrist or hand. Meibomian cysts (chalazion): cysts that form on the eyelid when an oil gland becomes blocked. Epidermal cysts: slow-growing cysts that form just beneath the skin surface from keratin.

What our patients say
Carried out by a consultant surgeon
Our surgeon, Obi Onyekwelu, performs all cyst removals at Changes Clinic Portsmouth. Obi is an NHS hand surgeon who runs his private surgical clinic at Changes Clinic, bringing NHS-standard technique to a private setting. You are not seeing a beauty therapist or a nurse practitioner. You are seeing a surgeon who does this work day in, day out, across NHS and private practice.
We assess the cyst, confirm the right approach for your specific case, and tell you exactly what to expect before we do anything.

Common questions
Do I need a GP referral for cyst removal?
No. You can book directly with us for cyst removal in Portsmouth without a GP referral. If your GP has referred you due to clinical concern, we can work with that referral and provide a full report.
Will cyst removal leave a scar?
All surgical procedures leave some mark, but in experienced hands this is kept as small as possible. The incision we make is minimal, and most of our patients heal with a flat, barely visible scar. Your surgeon will tell you what to expect for your specific cyst at the consultation.
Can the cyst come back after removal?
If we remove the cyst intact, including the sac wall, recurrence is unlikely. The risk increases if the cyst ruptures during removal, which is why technique matters. We take care to remove the whole cyst in one piece.
Is the procedure painful?
We apply local anaesthetic before we start, so you should feel no pain during the removal. Afterwards, some soreness and mild swelling is normal for a day or two, but most of our patients find it settles quickly.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients are comfortable and back to normal within a few days. We give you written aftercare instructions before you leave, and we are available if you have any concerns during recovery.
Can you remove a cyst that is infected?
Not immediately. If your cyst is red, hot or discharging, it needs antibiotic treatment first. Once the infection clears, we can assess and book the removal. If you are unsure whether your cyst is infected, come in for a consultation and we will advise.
How is a Meibomian cyst removed?
We remove Meibomian cysts on the eyelid under local anaesthetic, making a small incision on the inner surface of the lid so there is no visible scar. Recovery is quick. We assess suitability at your consultation.
