Blocked ears are frustrating. Muffled sound, a feeling of pressure, ringing or itching are all signs that wax has built up and is affecting your hearing. Ear microsuction removes it safely and effectively, usually in a single appointment.

Unlike ear syringing, microsuction uses no water. We use a small suction instrument and magnification to remove wax precisely, with full visibility of the ear canal throughout. We recommend this method for patients with sensitive ears, narrow canals, perforated eardrums or a history of ear problems.

Signs you may need ear wax removal

Muffled or reduced hearing

Wax build-up is one of the most common and most easily fixed causes of reduced hearing. If your hearing has changed suddenly or gradually, it is worth getting checked.

Pressure or fullness in the ear

A blocked feeling in the ear that does not go away on its own is often caused by impacted wax. Attempting to remove it at home with cotton buds usually makes it worse.

Ringing or buzzing

Tinnitus caused by wax build-up typically resolves once the wax is cleared. If tinnitus persists after removal, we will advise on next steps.

I’ve suffered with rosacea for several years and have tried all sorts of creams, skincare routines and products, but nothing really made a lasting difference. Lovely relaxed atmosphere with great staff. My lazer hair removal was undertaken by two very capable proffessional young women Kelly and Surmaiyah. Both demonstrate constant care and ensure this not always comfortable experience is as pleasant as possible. The facility is immaculately clean and there is excellent visitor free parking available. I am so glad I visited the Changes Clinic today for an upper abdominal ultrasound. I was a nervous wreck as I have a bit of a phobia of scans & Andrea was just brilliant with me. Safer and more comfortable than syringing

Ear syringing uses pressurised water to flush the ear canal. It is effective in many cases but carries more risk for patients with sensitive ears, prior ear infections, or perforations. Microsuction gives the clinician full visibility and direct control throughout, making it the safer and more comfortable option for most patients.

Common questions

Does microsuction hurt?

No. The procedure is gentle and generally pain-free. You may hear a mild suction sound and feel slight pressure, but there is no water and no discomfort for most patients.

How long does the appointment take?

Most appointments take 15-30 minutes. If both ears need treating, allow up to 30 minutes.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Using olive oil drops in the ears for two to three days before your appointment can soften the wax and make removal easier. We will advise you on this when you book.

Will I need more than one treatment?

Most patients need only one appointment for ear wax removal in Portsmouth. If the wax is very hard or impacted, a second appointment after further softening may occasionally be needed.

Can both ears be treated at once?

Yes. We routinely treat both ears in the same session.

Is it suitable for hearing aid users?

Yes. Wax build-up is especially common in hearing aid users and can affect how well the aid fits and performs. Microsuction is our recommended method for this group as it is precise and does not introduce water near the aid.
