IPL as an alternative to laser
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses broad-spectrum light to target hair follicles and inhibit future growth. The result is progressive hair reduction with each session, eventually achieving smooth, hair-free skin.
IPL differs from laser hair removal in the wavelength of light used. It is particularly well suited to certain skin tones and hair colours where IPL's wider spectrum performs well. At your free consultation, we will assess which method is right for you: IPL, Diode laser, YAG laser or Sterex electrolysis.

IPL for blemish and pigmentation removal
IPL does more than remove hair. The same technology can treat surface pigmentation, including age spots, sun damage, freckles and some blemishes. If you are looking to address uneven skin tone at the same time as hair removal, IPL may offer a useful dual benefit. We will discuss this at your consultation.

What to expect from a course
Most clients need six to eight sessions to achieve the best result. Sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart to catch follicles during their active growth phase. Hair becomes progressively finer and lighter between sessions, with a significant reduction visible by the midpoint of the course.
If IPL is not the most appropriate method for your hair or skin type, laser hair removal or Sterex electrolysis are available alternatives.

What our clients say
Common questions
Is IPL the same as laser?
No. Laser uses a single wavelength of light. IPL uses a broad spectrum. Both target the pigment in the hair follicle, but they suit different skin and hair types. We will advise on the right method at your consultation.
Does IPL hurt?
Most clients describe a mild snapping or warming sensation. It is generally well tolerated. Smaller or more sensitive areas may be briefly more uncomfortable.
Can IPL treat dark skin?
IPL is less suitable for very dark skin tones, as the broad-spectrum light can affect surrounding skin. YAG laser is a safer option for darker skin. We assess this at consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically six to eight sessions for IPL hair removal Portsmouth, spaced four to six weeks apart. The exact number depends on your hair type, skin tone and the area being treated.
Is there any downtime?
No. There may be mild redness for a short period after treatment, but you can return to normal activities the same day.
Can IPL treat blonde or grey hair?
Light-coloured hair has little pigment for the light to target, so IPL and laser are less effective. Sterex electrolysis is the recommended option for fine, grey or blonde hair.
