What is a lipoma?
A lipoma is a soft, slow-growing fatty lump that sits between the skin and the muscle layer beneath. They are almost always benign, but our patients come to us when a lipoma has grown large enough to bother them, become visible through clothing, or started to ache. Lipoma removal in Portsmouth at Changes Clinic is a surgical procedure with a short recovery, performed by our surgeon, Obi Onyekwelu.
How we remove lipomas at Changes Clinic
We carry out lipoma removal under local anaesthetic through a small incision in the skin. Your surgeon carefully separates the lipoma from the surrounding tissue and removes it in full. We close the wound with sutures, and healing typically takes a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the size.
Every lipoma we remove goes to the laboratory as standard. This rules out liposarcoma, a rare cancerous tumour that can occasionally look and feel similar to a lipoma. You and your GP both receive the full histology report. This is included in the cost of your procedure.
Once we remove a lipoma fully, it is extremely rare for it to return in the same location. A new lipoma can occasionally develop elsewhere over time, but the treated site very rarely sees regrowth.

What our patients say
Carried out by a consultant surgeon
Our surgeon, Obi Onyekwelu, performs all lipoma removals at Changes Clinic Portsmouth. Obi is an NHS hand surgeon who runs his private surgical clinic at Changes Clinic, bringing NHS-standard technique to a private setting. You are not seeing a beauty therapist or a nurse practitioner. You are seeing a surgeon who does this work day in, day out, across NHS and private practice.
We assess the lipoma, confirm the right approach for your specific case, and tell you exactly what to expect before we do anything.
If you have a lump that is growing quickly, feels fixed rather than moveable, or is causing significant pain, we recommend seeing your GP before booking.
If you have a cyst or a mole you want removed, visit our cyst removal and mole removal service pages.

Common questions
Do I need a GP referral for lipoma removal?
No. You can book a consultation directly with us for lipoma removal in Portsmouth without a GP referral. If your lump has grown quickly or feels unusual, we recommend seeing your GP first. For straightforward cosmetic removal, no referral is needed.
Is histology always included?
Yes. Every lipoma we remove goes to the laboratory to rule out liposarcoma. This is included in the cost of the procedure. You and your GP both receive the full report.
Will there be a scar?
We keep the incision as small as possible and close the wound neatly with sutures. Some scarring is normal, but in experienced surgical hands this is minimised. Most of our patients heal with a flat, faded scar within a few months.
Is the procedure painful?
We apply local anaesthetic before we start, so you should feel no pain during the removal. Some soreness and swelling in the days afterwards is normal and settles as the wound heals.
How long is recovery?
Most patients return to normal activities within a few days. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise until the wound has healed. Sutures are typically removed after five to ten days.
Can you remove multiple lipomas in one appointment?
In some cases, yes. It depends on the size and location of each lipoma. We will advise at your consultation what is practical in a single session.
What if the lipoma comes back?
Recurrence in the same spot after full removal is extremely rare. If you notice a new lump in the same area, book a follow-up consultation so we can assess it.
