When to have a mole removed
If you have noticed a change in a mole, such as rapid growth, an irregular border, a change in colour or texture, or any itching or bleeding, you should first see your GP for an assessment. If the mole is referred for removal, Changes Clinic can carry out the procedure with histological analysis of the removed tissue.
If the mole is stable and your GP is not concerned, but you would prefer it removed for cosmetic or practical reasons, we can remove it directly without a GP referral.
In either case, your consultation will establish the appropriate method and what to expect.
How moles are removed
Shave excision
The mole is shaved flush with the skin surface using a surgical blade. Suitable for raised moles with no suspicion of malignancy.
Cautery
The mole is removed and the area sealed using heat. Effective for smaller lesions.
Excision with sutures
The mole and a small margin of surrounding skin are cut out and the wound is closed with sutures. Used for deeper or more complex moles, and where histology is needed. The appropriate method depends on the size, depth and type of mole. We will recommend the right approach at your consultation.
