Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic procedure that uses tiny deposits of pigment to replicate the appearance of hair follicles on the scalp. For someone with a shaved head, it creates the look of a full, close-cropped hair line. For someone with thinning hair, it adds visual density that makes the scalp less visible through the hair.

It is not a medical treatment for hair loss. It does not stimulate growth or treat the underlying cause. What it does is give you a confident appearance when other treatments have not been enough, or when regrowth is not possible.

Who SMP is for

Men with receding hairlines or pattern baldness

SMP can reshape and recreate a natural-looking hairline and fill in areas of baldness to give the impression of a shaved head with a full hairline.

Women with thinning hair

For women with diffuse thinning or widening partings, SMP adds pigment density that reduces the visibility of the scalp through the hair without any change in hair length or style.

Alopecia and scar camouflage

SMP works well for patchy alopecia, visible scalp scars from surgery or injury, and areas affected by traction alopecia.

A gradual, layered process

SMP is built up over two to four sessions to achieve a natural, layered result. Each session adds to the last, gradually building depth and density. Spacing sessions one to two weeks apart allows the skin to settle and the pigment to stabilise between appointments.

Results typically last two to five years. A top-up session is then needed to maintain the sharpness and colour of the pigment as it fades naturally over time.

I’ve suffered with rosacea for several years and have tried all sorts of creams, skincare routines and products, but nothing really made a lasting difference. Lovely relaxed atmosphere with great staff. My lazer hair removal was undertaken by two very capable proffessional young women Kelly and Surmaiyah. Both demonstrate constant care and ensure this not always comfortable experience is as pleasant as possible. The facility is immaculately clean and there is excellent visitor free parking available. Is SMP painful?

Most clients describe it as mildly uncomfortable. We apply numbing cream to the scalp to keep you comfortable throughout.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically two to four, depending on the coverage area, your skin type and the depth of result you want. We always start lighter and build, as it is much easier to add than to remove.

Does it look natural?

Yes, when done well. We match the pigment carefully to your hair colour and skin tone, and build the result in layers so it looks like natural follicles rather than a solid block of colour.

Can women have SMP?

Yes. SMP for women is different from the shaved-head look associated with male SMP. For women, we add subtle density to the areas where the scalp shows through thinning hair, without creating a harsh hairline.

Will it stop my hair from falling out?

No. SMP camouflages hair loss. It does not treat the underlying cause. If you want to slow or address hair loss, a trichology consultation at our hair loss clinic is the right place to start.

How long does scalp micropigmentation in Portsmouth last?

Two to five years before a top-up is needed. The pigment fades gradually and naturally. It does not change colour abruptly. Annual or biennial check-ins can keep the result looking sharp.
