How sclerotherapy works
Sclerotherapy is the gold-standard injection treatment for spider veins and small thread veins. We inject a specialist solution directly into each vein, irritating the vessel wall and causing it to collapse. The body then absorbs the collapsed vein over the following weeks, and the surface appearance of the veins fades.
Treated veins are permanently closed. They do not return, though new spider veins can develop in the same area over time.
At Changes Clinic in Portsmouth, your first consultation is free. We assess the veins, confirm sclerotherapy is appropriate, and explain what to expect.

Who it is for
Spider veins can affect anyone, but are more common in people who spend long periods standing, those with a family history of vein problems, and women who have been pregnant. They appear most often on the legs but can also appear on the face and other areas.
Sclerotherapy is suitable for most patients with visible spider or thread veins. We will confirm suitability at consultation.

What to expect after treatment
The two weeks following treatment require wearing compression stockings to support the veins as they close. Most patients can return to normal activities immediately, though strenuous exercise should be avoided for a short period.
Treated veins fade gradually over several weeks. Most patients need two to four sessions for the best result, spaced a few weeks apart.
For patients where injection is not the preferred method, visit our spider vein treatment page for alternative techniques.

What our patients say
Common questions
Is sclerotherapy painful?
The injections cause a brief mild stinging or pinching sensation. Most patients find it very manageable. You do not need anaesthetic.
How long before I see results?
Treated veins begin to fade over two to four weeks. Multiple sessions are usually needed for the full result.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients need two to four sessions of sclerotherapy in Portsmouth, spaced four to six weeks apart. The number depends on the extent and size of the veins.
Are the results permanent?
Yes, for the treated veins. Once a vein is closed, it does not reopen. However, new spider veins can develop elsewhere over time as a natural part of ageing.
Can sclerotherapy be used on the face?
Sclerotherapy can treat some facial veins, but the approach varies. We assess the area at consultation and advise the most appropriate method.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
No. Sclerotherapy is not recommended during pregnancy. If spider veins have appeared during pregnancy, we recommend waiting until after delivery and breastfeeding before treatment.
