Seborrheic Keratosis Removal Portsmouth
Seborrheic keratoses are one of the most common benign skin growths in adults over 40. They are not dangerous, not contagious, and not related to cancer — but they can be uncomfortable, conspicuous and difficult to ignore when they itch, catch on clothing or appear in visible areas of the face and body.
At Changes Clinic in Cosham, Portsmouth, our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners offer clinical removal of seborrheic keratoses in a CQC-registered setting. If you have been told to leave them alone but you want them gone, we can help.

What Seborrheic Keratoses Are
They range in colour from pale tan to dark brown or near-black, and they vary in size from a few millimetres to several centimetres. They appear most often on the face, scalp, chest, shoulders and back, and they become more common with age.
The exact cause is not fully understood, but the growths are benign — they are not precancerous and they do not become cancerous. Many patients choose to leave them in place. Others find them cosmetically unwanted, physically irritating (they can itch or bleed if repeatedly caught), or a source of concern that a clinical opinion can resolve.
Treatment Options at Changes Clinic
We select the most appropriate method for each patient based on the size, location and type of growth, and on how many are being treated.
Cryotherapy
We apply liquid nitrogen directly to the growth, which freezes the tissue and causes it to die and fall away over the following one to two weeks. Cryotherapy works well for flatter, well-defined growths and is a quick, targeted approach with minimal surrounding skin disruption.
Electrocautery
We use a controlled electrical current to burn through the base of the growth and remove it. Electrocautery is precise and effective for raised or thicker keratoses. It destroys the tissue cleanly and seals the area as it works, reducing bleeding.
Laser
For some patients — particularly those with multiple growths or those where precision around sensitive areas is important — laser treatment offers a controlled, targeted option. During your free consultation, we assess your keratoses and recommend the method most suited to your case. We also confirm that the growths are consistent with a seborrheic keratosis diagnosis. If we have any clinical uncertainty about a lesion, we will advise you to have it evaluated before proceeding with removal.
What to Expect
Your Consultation
We begin with a free consultation to examine the growths, discuss your treatment options and confirm that removal is appropriate. This is the right time to ask any questions about the procedure, recovery and outcomes.
Treatment Day
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic where needed, so patients are comfortable throughout. The session time depends on the number and size of growths being treated — a single lesion may take as little as 15 minutes; treating multiple growths across a larger area takes longer.
Recovery
Recovery varies by method: - Cryotherapy — the treated area develops a blister or scab over the following days. The growth typically falls away within one to two weeks. The skin underneath heals over the following weeks. Some temporary redness or lightening of the skin can occur. - Electrocautery — a small scab forms at the site and falls away within one to two weeks. The area should be kept clean and dry during healing. - Laser — similar to electrocautery in terms of healing. Redness and mild swelling settle within a few days; the treated tissue heals over one to two weeks. In all cases, we advise keeping the area out of direct sun during the healing period and applying SPF once the skin has healed.
