What does skin lesion removal actually involve?
Many patients come to us having waited months for an NHS referral that never progressed, or having been told their lesion is benign and therefore not a clinical priority. They want it removed for a combination of reasons: it catches on clothing, it has changed in appearance, it bothers them cosmetically, or they simply want to know what it is. Understanding what the removal process involves is often what prevents them from booking.
Skin lesion removal at Changes Clinic is a clinical procedure, not a cosmetic treatment. A practitioner examines the lesion first. If they have any concern about its appearance, they will refer you to a dermatologist before any removal takes place. If the lesion is suitable for removal in our clinic, the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. You will feel pressure but not pain. The lesion is excised and the site is closed with sutures or left to heal depending on its size and location.
The procedure itself typically takes 20-40 minutes. Most patients return to normal activity the same day. Here is what we offer at Changes Clinic.

About skin lesion removal at Changes Clinic
We treat a wide range of benign skin lesions including moles, cysts, lipomas, skin tags, dermatofibromas and other raised or pigmented lesions. Each patient undergoes a clinical assessment before we agree to remove anything.
Where histological analysis is appropriate, we send the excised tissue for laboratory examination. This provides a definitive answer on what the lesion was, which many patients find reassuring.
Treatment at a glance: - Procedure time: 20-40 minutes depending on size and type - Anaesthetic: local, administered at the start of the procedure - Downtime: mild soreness for a few days. Sutures removed at 7-14 days depending on site - Histology: available on request or where clinically indicated - Areas treated: face, scalp, neck, back, chest, arms, legs and other body sites - Follow-up: included as standard to review healing and remove sutures if placed

Skin lesion removal performed by our clinical practitioners
Skin lesion removal requires more than a steady hand. It requires clinical judgment: the ability to assess a lesion's features, identify any features that require further investigation, and select the appropriate removal method for the tissue type, depth and location of the lesion.
At Changes Clinic, every removal is preceded by a clinical assessment. We do not remove lesions without first examining them. If we see anything that warrants a dermatology review, we will tell you directly and support you in getting the right referral.
Changes Clinic is CQC-registered, providing independent oversight of our clinical standards and procedures. You can read more about the procedures we offer on our skin lesion removal service page.

What our patients say
Common questions
Is skin lesion removal safe?
Surgical removal of benign skin lesions is a well-established, low-risk procedure when performed by a trained clinical practitioner in a properly equipped clinical environment. The main risks are minor: temporary bruising, swelling and soreness around the site. Infection is uncommon when aftercare instructions are followed. Our clinical practitioners carry out a full assessment before any removal, and all equipment is sterile and single-use.
How is clinical removal different from over-the-counter lesion treatments?
Over-the-counter products, such as topical acids or freezing kits, are designed for very superficial lesions and work with variable results. They cannot remove deep cysts or lipomas, and they are not appropriate for any lesion where the nature of the tissue needs to be confirmed. Clinical removal under local anaesthetic provides a complete and precise result, and allows the tissue to be sent for histological analysis if required.
Can skin lesion removal be combined with other treatments at Changes Clinic?
Yes. Some patients combine a skin lesion removal appointment with a consultation about other skin concerns. Depending on the lesion site and healing status, skin treatments such as professional skincare or acne treatment can run alongside or follow a removal procedure. Your practitioner will advise on appropriate timing.
