What does skin lesion removal actually involve, and do I need a GP referral?
Many people put off removing a skin lesion because they are not sure what the procedure involves, whether it will scar, or how to access treatment without waiting for an NHS referral. These are all reasonable concerns, and we can address each one directly.
Skin lesion removal at Changes Clinic is a minor surgical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. Most patients feel little more than the initial anaesthetic injection. The removal itself is typically painless, and the whole procedure takes less than an hour for most lesions. Healing time varies by lesion type and size, but the majority of patients return to normal activity the same day.
On scarring: any surgical removal that breaks skin will leave some trace. The aim is to minimise this through careful technique, appropriate wound closure and aftercare guidance. Your practitioner will tell you what to expect for the specific lesion before you agree to treatment.
On referrals: you do not need a GP referral to book at Changes Clinic. You can self-refer for a consultation. If your lesion requires further investigation or onward referral, we will advise you on the appropriate next step.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. Depending on the type and size of the lesion, your practitioner may use excision, curettage or cauterisation. Removed tissue is sent for histological analysis where indicated. You receive wound care instructions and a follow-up plan after the procedure.

What our patients say
Common questions
Is skin lesion removal safe?
Minor surgical removal under local anaesthetic is a well-established, low-risk procedure. Risks include infection, bleeding, scarring and, rarely, an adverse reaction to local anaesthetic. These risks are minimised by proper clinical assessment, sterile technique and clear aftercare guidance. Our practitioners review your medical history, including any medications that affect bleeding, before any procedure takes place.
How is surgical skin lesion removal different from at-home removal products?
Over-the-counter treatments such as cryotherapy pens, salicylic acid products and removal creams are designed for specific lesion types, primarily warts and verrucas, and carry no clinical assessment. They do not distinguish between benign and potentially concerning lesions, and they cannot remove deeper structures such as cysts or lipomas. Surgical removal by a trained practitioner removes the lesion in full, with the option of histological analysis, and gives you a clinical opinion on the nature of what was removed.
Can I have multiple lesions removed at the same appointment?
In many cases, yes. Your practitioner will assess all lesions at your consultation and advise on whether removal of multiple lesions in a single session is appropriate, based on their location, size and type. Some combinations are better staged across two appointments. We will give you a clear plan at your consultation.
