Patients come to us for private ultrasound for several different reasons. Some have been waiting months for an NHS scan and want answers sooner. Others have a specific concern, a lump, pain in a soft tissue area, or a suspected cyst, and want it investigated without waiting for a GP referral pathway to move.
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of soft tissue structures inside the body. It does not use radiation. It is particularly effective for imaging muscles, tendons, joints, the abdomen, the pelvis, the thyroid, lymph nodes and superficial lumps. It does not image bone or air-filled structures well, and it is not a replacement for other diagnostic imaging such as MRI or CT where those are clinically indicated.
What an ultrasound scan can tell you depends on the clinical question. At Changes Clinic, your scan is interpreted by a qualified sonographer, and the findings are explained to you at the appointment. You leave with a written report. If the scan identifies something that requires onward referral, we will tell you clearly and support you in accessing the appropriate next step.

Ultrasound scans performed by qualified sonographers
Our sonographers hold the appropriate qualifications and professional registrations for diagnostic ultrasound scanning in the UK. Scanning requires both technical competence and clinical interpretation skills. Accurate reporting depends on knowing what to look for in each anatomical area, how to position the probe to obtain diagnostic images, and how to recognise findings that need further investigation.
Changes Clinic operates from a CQC-registered facility at 1000 Lakeside, Cosham, Portsmouth. The clinical standards of a regulated healthcare setting apply to every scan we perform.
Full information about the scan types available and how to prepare for your appointment is on our ultrasound scan service page.

What our patients say
Common questions
Is an ultrasound scan safe?
Diagnostic ultrasound does not use ionising radiation. It uses high-frequency sound waves, which have an excellent safety record across many decades of clinical use, including in obstetrics. There are no known risks associated with receiving a diagnostic ultrasound scan. The examination is non-invasive and typically painless, involving only the application of gel and a probe to the skin surface.
How is a private ultrasound scan different from waiting for an NHS scan?
An NHS ultrasound scan requires a GP referral, followed by a waiting period that can range from weeks to months depending on NHS capacity in your area and the urgency of the clinical need. A private scan at Changes Clinic requires no referral and is typically available within a few days of your enquiry. The quality of the imaging and the interpretation is equivalent, and the written report you receive is suitable for sharing with NHS clinicians.
Can an ultrasound scan be combined with other services at Changes Clinic?
Some patients book an ultrasound scan to investigate a lump or skin lesion they are also considering having removed at our clinic. If the scan indicates a lesion is benign and suitable for private removal, your clinician can discuss next steps in the same visit. We can also support onward referral if the scan findings require specialist input.
