Do I need a GP referral for a private ultrasound scan — and what can it actually show?
Both questions matter, and they are worth addressing plainly.
On referrals: you do not need a GP referral to book a private ultrasound scan at Changes Clinic. You can self-refer directly. Many patients come to us because they have a symptom they want investigated without waiting for a GP appointment to authorise onward referral, or because they have already seen their GP and want faster access to imaging than the NHS waiting list allows.
On what an ultrasound can show: diagnostic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of soft tissue structures inside the body. It is the primary imaging tool for many abdominal and pelvic conditions, and it provides clear images of soft tissue masses, organ structure, fluid collections, thyroid and neck structures, musculoskeletal issues and more. It does not use radiation, which makes it safe for repeat imaging and for patients for whom radiation-based imaging would be a concern.
What an ultrasound cannot show is everything. It has limitations for structures behind bone or gas, and some conditions require further investigation with CT or MRI. If your scan indicates the need for further imaging or onward referral, your sonographer will advise you on the appropriate next step.

Ultrasound scans performed by qualified sonographers
Diagnostic ultrasound requires specialist training to perform accurately and to interpret correctly. At Changes Clinic, our sonographers hold relevant clinical qualifications and work to the same standard expected in an NHS diagnostic imaging department.
Your scan takes place at our CQC-registered clinic at 1000 Lakeside, Cosham, Portsmouth. A written report is provided after the scan. If findings require onward clinical review, we will advise clearly on what to do next and can liaise with your GP if appropriate.

What our patients say
Common questions
Is a private ultrasound scan safe?
Diagnostic ultrasound does not use ionising radiation. It works with high-frequency sound waves, which have no known harmful effects at the diagnostic power levels used. It is safe for adults and is routinely used in obstetric imaging for the same reason. There are no significant risks associated with a standard diagnostic ultrasound scan.
How is a private ultrasound scan different from waiting for an NHS scan?
An NHS ultrasound scan follows a GP or specialist referral and is subject to waiting times that vary significantly by area and clinical priority. A private ultrasound scan at Changes Clinic is available within days and does not require a GP referral. The imaging quality and clinical standard are the same. Private scanning is particularly useful when a patient needs timely information to guide a treatment decision or to rule out a condition before symptoms worsen.
Can I have a private ultrasound scan alongside other consultations at Changes Clinic?
Yes. Patients who attend for a skin lesion assessment or other clinical consultation sometimes combine their visit with a diagnostic ultrasound scan if they have a separate area of concern. Your appointments can be scheduled together. Speak to our team when booking to arrange this.
