Does HIFU actually work?
HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) has generated enough online noise, both positive and negative, that it is reasonable to ask the question directly. The scepticism exists because the aesthetics market has produced a large number of low-grade devices sold under the HIFU name that produce inconsistent results or none at all. This has created genuine uncertainty about whether the technology works.
The underlying science is well-established. HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy to the SMAS layer, the fibromuscular tissue layer underneath the skin that surgical facelifts also target. This energy creates thermal coagulation points that stimulate the body's collagen production response. Over the following months, the treated tissue contracts and the overlying skin tightens. Clinical studies support this mechanism and its outcomes for mild to moderate skin laxity.
The quality of the result depends on the device used and whether the energy is delivered accurately to the correct tissue depth. Consumer-grade HIFU devices operate at lower energies and achieve shallower depths. Clinical-grade devices, set correctly by a trained practitioner, can reach the SMAS layer where the meaningful lifting response occurs. At Changes Clinic, your qualified, experienced & insured practitioners assess your skin before treatment and determines the appropriate parameters for your anatomy.

About HIFU at Changes Clinic
Our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners use clinical-grade HIFU technology to deliver focused ultrasound energy to multiple tissue depths, including the superficial dermis, the deeper dermis and the SMAS layer. This stimulates collagen production and causes gradual tissue contraction in the months following treatment.
HIFU is most effective for lifting the brow, jawline and jowl area, tightening the neck and improving overall skin tone in clients with mild to moderate laxity. Results develop over 4 to 6 months and many clients see continued improvement up to 6 months post-treatment.

HIFU carried out by our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners
Correct HIFU treatment requires a practitioner to understand the anatomy of the face at multiple tissue depths, choose the right transducer heads for each treatment area, and set energy parameters that will reach the target layer without damaging surrounding tissue. This is clinical knowledge, not simply operating a device.

What our clients say
Common questions
Is HIFU safe?
Clinical-grade HIFU is a non-ionising treatment with no radiation. The most common side effects are temporary redness, tingling, tenderness and mild swelling, which typically resolve within a few days. Less commonly, clients experience temporary numbness or bruising in the treated area. These resolve on their own. Serious adverse events are rare and are most often associated with incorrect depth settings on inappropriate devices. Our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners use clinical-grade equipment and carries out an individual assessment before every treatment.
How is HIFU different from a surgical facelift?
A surgical facelift removes excess skin and repositions deeper tissue through incisions, under general anaesthetic, with a recovery period of several weeks. The results are more dramatic and last longer, typically 7 to 10 years. HIFU does not involve surgery or anaesthetic. It stimulates the body's own collagen response over several months, producing a gradual lift and tightening effect that is natural-looking but more modest. For clients with mild to moderate laxity who want improvement without surgery, HIFU is a clinically sound option. For clients with significant skin excess, surgery would produce a better result, and we will say so.
Can HIFU be combined with other treatments at Changes Clinic?
Yes. HIFU combines well with dermal fillers for volume loss, anti-wrinkle injections for expression lines, and RF microneedling for skin texture and surface quality. These treatments address different aspects of skin ageing and work complementarily. Your qualified, experienced & insured practitioners can recommend the right combination at consultation based on your specific concerns and your skin.
