Is HIFU painful, and does it actually deliver results?
Both questions come up regularly, and both deserve a direct answer.
On pain: HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is not a painless treatment. The focused ultrasound energy creates a thermal effect at precise depths in the tissue, and most clients feel this as a warm, prickling or sharp sensation during the delivery of each pulse. The intensity varies by area, with the cheeks and brow generally more comfortable than the jawline and neck. Topical numbing cream reduces but does not eliminate the sensation. The treatment is typically well tolerated, and the discomfort stops as soon as each pulse passes. There is no residual pain once the session ends.
On results: HIFU works by targeting the SMAS layer of the face, the same deep tissue layer addressed in a surgical facelift. The focused energy creates controlled thermal injury at that depth, triggering a wound-healing and collagen-building response. The result develops over two to three months as new collagen forms and contracts. Clients typically see a visible improvement in jawline definition, jowl lift, brow position and neck skin laxity. The effect is real and measurable, though it is not equivalent to the result of surgical intervention. Here is what we offer at Changes Clinic.

About HIFU at Changes Clinic
Our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners assess every client before HIFU treatment to determine which depths and areas to target, and to confirm suitability. HIFU is not appropriate for all skin types and conditions, and delivering it at the wrong parameters for a given patient produces disappointing results.
We treat the face and neck, targeting brow laxity, mid-face sagging, jowls, jawline definition, and neck skin. The treatment can also be used on the decolletage. Each session is planned around the specific findings of your assessment.
Treatment at a glance: - Treatment time: 45-90 minutes depending on areas treated - Results timeline: initial tightening within 1-2 weeks, full collagen response at 2-3 months - Results duration: 12-18 months typically, with maintenance sessions recommended - Downtime: mild redness and sensitivity for 24-48 hours. Occasional temporary swelling - Sessions: one session often sufficient for initial treatment, with follow-up at 3 months - Anaesthetic: topical numbing cream applied 30-45 minutes before treatment

HIFU delivered by our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners
HIFU devices require clinical knowledge to operate safely and effectively. The depth settings, energy levels and number of shots per area need to match the anatomy and skin condition of the individual patient. Applied incorrectly, HIFU can produce burns, nerve irritation or simply no result.
At Changes Clinic, our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners carry out every HIFU assessment and treatment plan. We select the appropriate transducer depths and energy parameters for your skin before the session begins. If your skin or medical history makes you unsuitable for HIFU, we will tell you at the consultation stage and suggest an alternative if one exists.
Changes Clinic is CQC-registered. You can read more about the technology and the treatment process on our HIFU service page.

What our clients say
Common questions
Is HIFU safe?
HIFU has a well-established safety record in both medical and aesthetic applications. When delivered by a trained practitioner at the correct parameters for the individual patient, the main side effects are temporary: redness, mild swelling and sensitivity in the treated area for 24-48 hours. Transient nerve tingling can occur in some patients but typically resolves within days to weeks. Our qualified, experienced & insured practitioners carry out a full assessment before treatment to confirm suitability and select the right settings for your skin.
How is HIFU different from a surgical facelift?
A surgical facelift physically repositions and removes excess skin and underlying tissue under general anaesthetic, with a recovery of several weeks. HIFU uses focused ultrasound to stimulate the same deep tissue layer from outside the skin, producing a collagen-building response that lifts and tightens from within. The results of HIFU are less dramatic and less immediate than surgery, but there is no surgical risk, no anaesthetic, no recovery time and no scarring. HIFU is suited to clients with mild to moderate laxity who want a non-surgical option.
Can HIFU be combined with other treatments at Changes Clinic?
Yes. HIFU combines well with dermal fillers for volume and HIFU for lifting, or with anti-wrinkle injections to address dynamic lines while HIFU addresses tissue laxity. RF microneedling can complement HIFU by working on the skin surface while HIFU addresses the deeper layers. Your qualified, experienced & insured practitioners can put together a combined plan at your consultation.
