The word "removal" covers a wide range of procedures, and what is right for you depends entirely on what type of lesion you have, where it is, and whether it needs laboratory analysis after removal.
Many patients come to us after waiting months for an NHS referral, or after being told their lesion is not a clinical priority despite causing them discomfort or concern. Others want removal for a combination of practical and cosmetic reasons, particularly for moles, cysts, lipomas or skin tags in visible or irritated areas.
The first step at Changes Clinic is always an assessment. Our clinician examines the lesion, takes a detailed history and determines the appropriate approach. We do not proceed with any removal until we understand what we are dealing with. If there is any clinical concern about the nature of the lesion, we refer for investigation before proceeding. Removed tissue can also be sent for histological analysis on request.

About skin lesion removal at Changes Clinic
Our clinical team removes a range of benign skin lesions including moles, cysts, lipomas, skin tags and seborrhoeic keratoses. The technique used depends on the type and size of the lesion: options include surgical excision, shave removal and minor cauterisation.
Surgical excision involves removing the lesion and a small margin of surrounding tissue, with the wound closed using sutures. Shave removal is used for raised lesions that sit above the skin surface. Both are carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure.

Skin lesion removal performed by our clinical team
Skin lesion removal is a minor surgical procedure. At Changes Clinic, it is performed by clinicians with the training and regulatory oversight to carry it out safely. Our CQC-registered clinic at 1000 Lakeside, Cosham, Portsmouth operates under the clinical standards required for minor surgical procedures, including appropriate sterile field protocols.
Every patient has a consultation and assessment before any procedure is booked. This is not optional: the assessment determines the correct technique, confirms the lesion is suitable for private removal, and identifies any need for referral before or after the procedure.
More information about the types of lesions we treat and the procedures we perform is on our skin lesion removal service page.

What our patients say
Common questions
Is skin lesion removal safe?
Minor surgical lesion removal is a well-established procedure with a low complication rate when performed in a clinical setting by a trained practitioner. The main risks are infection, scarring and incomplete removal. We manage these through proper surgical technique, sterile protocols and thorough post-operative aftercare instructions. All patients receive written guidance on wound care following their procedure. If we have any concern about a lesion's appearance at assessment, we will discuss next steps with you before proceeding.
How is clinical skin lesion removal different from home or over-the-counter removal methods?
Over-the-counter products and home removal devices work on a limited range of surface lesions, typically skin tags, and do not remove deeper structures like cysts or lipomas. They also provide no histological analysis of removed tissue. Clinical removal at Changes Clinic uses surgical technique under local anaesthetic, removes the lesion in full (including the root structure where relevant), and can send tissue for laboratory analysis. This matters particularly for moles or any lesion with an unusual appearance.
Can skin lesion removal be combined with other treatments at Changes Clinic?
Patients often address multiple lesions in a single appointment rather than booking separate visits. We can typically treat more than one lesion at the same session, depending on the type, location and number involved. Your clinician will confirm what is appropriate at your assessment. Some patients also enquire about aesthetic treatments after skin lesion removal once healing is complete.
